Post one thing (or more, it’s your life) that bugs you about your current ride. No matter how much you like it. For me, it’s not the scratchy plastic, it’s not the lack of toys, it’s the f*@#ing bolsters. Or rather, the lack thereof. For me it’s bad enough, but at least I have the steering wheel to hold on to. For passengers... well...

Kinja'd!!!

This area appears only in pictures. In real life it’s 17 different types of useless.

And now you.

Limiting it to “intrinsic flaws” rather than “flaws because the car has been to the moon and back”, the proximity of the canister oil filter assembly to the firewall. Why sure, I would like to knock the hood seal loose every time I remove the oil filter and get bits of leaves down into the housing. Why not.

The trunk. When we upgraded from a 2007 Focus to this 2010 Volvo S40 R-Design we jumped leagues ahead in terms of styling, comfort, power and interior space. The trunk is laughable! 12.6 cubic feet vs the “tiny” Focus’ 18.0.

Of course we didn’t realize just how tiny it was until after purchasing the car. Also we don’t really care because the rest of the car more than makes up for the loss in grocery storage.

They have an intermittent setting, but it is not adjustable.

There are also TWO “wash” settings for the rear wiper. Why?

My STI: the clutch modulation. Its a rather numb clutch and working it at low-rpms is a chore sometimes. Especially when I’m wearing my heavy work boots.

My rx-8: either the relay for the primary auxiliary valve is sticking or the valve itself is gummed up. So between 4-6k rpms it gets a bit ‘lungy’ sometimes when I’m on and off the throttle. Hopefully some seafoam will clear it up. If not, I only mhave to pull the upper intake to clean it.

For the work boots, I can recommend the clutch but not the gear ratios of a 2.5 Golf. Dat tall 1st gear ugh

What exactly is the function of the primary auxiliary valve? Not up on rotaries.

The cap pulls off with a center pole thingy attached that runs through the center of the filter. That opens a hole and allows the canister to drain into the pan. That post being attached means you can’t just take the cap aside, you have to go up all the way clear - straight up.

Once you’ve done that, you can grab the mostly-drained canister out of the housing and trash it, and since it’s a smaller diameter than the cap it goes more easily... The cap and post is the pain in the rear part, basically.

The Willys has CJ7 front discs, which means every time I have to change the rotors I need to take the hub off the axle just to get to the disc, which is currently something I need to do. Not my Jeep in the pic, but almost the same setup. It is such a PITA.

Alright here’s one for you. Not only does my car have 6 fucking front control arms (replacing them all next Friday). but to get the bolt out of the rear lower passenger side you have to drop the sub frame. The bolt is too long to slide out. That means I have to disconnect the sterring from inside the car too.

The PAV is like a flapper valve that allows more air into the engine as rpms go up. Then above 7krpms, the sequential shutter valve opens for maximum flow.

If you ever look at an rx8 dyno graph, you can actually see when these valves open on the graph due to the temporary moment of turbulence it creates. (Quick dips in the graph)

NFC, other than the fact that the difference between disc hubs and drum hubs is that the disc hubs have the back machined for the rotor hat to sit flush against. I’m not sure what parts bin they pulled the caliper brackets and disc out of, but I am sure it was all designed to save money. That being said, you can usually change out the hubs in no matter of time at all.

You tend to see captive rotors like that anywhere the stock bearings were big and the original setup used drums - easier conversion for the factory to discs - can even be the same hub machined slightly differently most of the time. You see this also on 4WD GMC trucks of the “heavy half-ton” variety up until the 90s, for one.

Ford, in their infinite wisdom, liked to use hub rotors instead, which are just as bad to disassemble but mean pressing out bearings from one rotor and pressing them into the next when you want a new one - rather than pressing the studs out of the hub to release the disc and pressing them back in with a new disc. Two equally bad solutions.

True. It’s weird though how you can look at a base Golf and wonder if it’s a GTI, but you can NEVER look at a GTI and wonder if it’s a normal one. You just know.

I love subtle stuff like that. I’m trying to keep my mods around that theme.

I agree! It’s damn near amazing considering my commute. My drive to work is 8 miles and about 20 minutes. 12 or so of those minutes are stop-and-go traffic between stoplights.

A lot of people I know that live farther out of town have longer commutes and more highway driving, and they naturally see decent MPGs based on that. They tend to assume a car gets the same gas mileage no matter what.
